Strategies for Getting Kids Excited About Math Education
Math practice makes perfect. Okay, maybe not perfect, but it can certainly help kids sharpen their skills, which is essential to academic success. What may be a challenge for you, however, is getting your child excited about math so they’ll actually want to practice it. After all, research tells us that when we’re interested in an activity, we are more likely to retain information from it. At this point, you might be thinking that it’s easier said than done. Well, we’re here to tell you that there are some simple strategies for getting kids enthusiastic about math education!
Be Positive About Math
Let’s be honest. Not everyone is a fan of math. In fact, many adults admit to hating math. However, despite any negative feelings you may have about math, it’s critical to remain positive when working on mathematical concepts with your child.
Additionally, try to be an example by showing confidence when using math every day. For example, point out when you’re balancing your checkbook or counting money. It’s also an excellent idea to keep up to date on what your child is learning in school. Try asking their teacher for an outline or checking the website of your state’s department of education.
Make Math Education Fun
Consider some fun ways to encourage your child to use math outside of the classroom. For instance, challenge them to calculate how much money they would need to save, including any taxes and discounts, to buy something they really want. Furthermore, let them know that much of what they like wouldn’t exist without math. This might include social media sites, smart phones, or their favorite video games.
In addition, you can incorporate math into activities that your child enjoys:
- For the technology fanatics, there are fun, math-based video games and apps.
- For the book lovers, try to find books in which the main characters use math education to solve problems.
- For sports and music fans, point out how math is essential in playing any game or song.
The goal is to help your child make positive connections between math and the things they are interested in.
Consider an After-School Program to Help Kids With Math
Enlisting the help of supplemental education services is a great strategy as well. However, not all organizations are created equal. The best math programs are taught by instructors and tutors who are well versed in the concepts and methods being used in today’s schools. Moreover, a great after-school program will present ideas and methods in a fun and stimulating environment, which encourages kids to feel excited about participating in math education.
The enrichment program at Best in Class Education Center does more than help students build a foundation of mathematics. Our hands-on methods show kids how math is used in everyday life.
