6 Great New Year's Resolutions for Students
Didn’t this year seem to fly by? It seems like just yesterday the kids were getting ready for their first day of school. Certainly, they’re well into their normal school routines by now; however, it’s possible that they’re slightly thrown off by the recent holiday breaks. It’s perfectly normal, but you may be struggling with how you’re going to get them back into the swing of things. Fortunately, a new year can be seen as a fresh start for all. As a provider of student enrichment programs, we at Best in Class have learned a thing or two about what promotes academic success. We have some suggestions for New Year’s resolutions that will help the rest of the year go smoothly!
While accomplishments such as being a straight-A student are certainly excellent to strive for, it’s important to encourage your child to think of reachable goals. Not that the good grades aren’t possible, but it’s good to start off with something that they can absolutely control.
1. Read More
Reading is food for the brain for everyone, young and old. We’re not necessarily saying to assign specified reading assignments. This is something they can get in school or after school student enrichment programs. Instead, ask them to read whatever they’re interested in and maybe even think about offering rewards for doing so. This could be as simple as stickers or something more considerable like eating out at a favorite restaurant.
2. Learn Something New
Broadening educational experience is at the heart of enrichment programs for students, and you can encourage the same at home. Ask your child if there is something new that they’d like to learn. This could be a new concept such as the multiplication table, or it could be a new sport or instrument.
3. Better Study Habits
Easier said than done, right? Getting kids to study can sometimes be a challenge, so what you’ll want to do here is devise a solid homework plan. Create a quiet space and set aside a certain amount of time every night to organize and work through homework. Of course, if work or other activities make it difficult for you to set aside time for study help, you can also consider enrolling your child in a student enrichment program.
A healthy body and mind are key when it comes to digesting and retaining information. Furthermore, generally instilling responsibility and respectability is important for school and beyond. If your child feels better, they’re more likely to perform better in school.
1. Health and Fitness
It’s probably no surprise to see this on a resolution list, but it definitely bears repeating. Setting goals for better exercise, eating, and sleeping habits can improve concentration and energy levels. You may also want to set a good example by setting the same goals for yourself. Again, if you find yourself struggling with time and availability, there are some student enrichment programs that might be able to [help with health and nutrition] (https://www.bestinclasseducation.com/programs/summercamp/).
2. Helping Out More
Sure, chores are probably not going to be at the top of your child’s list but, at the risk of sounding old-fashioned, it builds character. Completing chores at home can teach children to start and finish tasks, as well as prepare them for the eventual transition into higher education and the workforce.
3. Being a Good Citizen
This is basically what we as parents and instructors are aiming to do, right? We want our children to become productive members of society so that our practices, traditions, and values are carried on. Simple tasks such as picking up trash, recycling, volunteering, or even being more green can help maintain a sense of citizenship.
